What a 200A upgrade involves and costs
A service upgrade replaces the panel and meter main, brings grounding and bonding to current code, and is inspected under a city electrical permit — $4,000–$12,000 in most Bay Area cases depending on service type (overhead vs. underground), panel location, and whether the utility service line itself needs upsizing.
The schedule wildcard is PG&E: service upgrades require utility coordination, and their queue — not the electrician — usually sets the calendar, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. The practical rule: file the PG&E application at the start of any project that needs the upgrade, not when the panel becomes the blocker. EV charger installation
A Level 2 charger is a 240V circuit, typically 40–60 amps, landing in the garage or at a driveway pedestal — $1,500–$4,000 installed when panel capacity exists, driven mostly by the distance and difficulty of the wire run. When the load calculation says the panel is full, you have two paths: the 200A upgrade, or a smart load-management device ($500–$1,200) that shares capacity with the dryer or range and pauses charging during peaks. For one EV on a tight panel, load management often wins; for a household electrifying everything, it's a Band-Aid.
Plan the whole electrification stack once
The expensive mistake is buying capacity piecemeal: an EV circuit this year, a panel crisis when the induction range arrives, another when the heat pump goes in, a third when the ADU needs a feeder. One load calculation at the start answers everything: whether 200A covers the five-year plan (it usually does), whether an ADU pushes you toward 320A or a separate service, and which conduit to lay while walls are open or trenches are dug. Ten minutes of planning during a remodel routinely saves a five-figure retrofit later — it's a standard part of our project design reviews.
Permits, safety, and who does the work
Panel and circuit work requires permits everywhere in the Bay Area, and this is one place never to economize: unpermitted electrical surfaces at resale, complicates insurance claims, and — unlike ugly tile — can burn the house down. How long does a panel upgrade take?+
On-site work is one to two days, and city inspection follows promptly. The calendar is set by PG&E coordination — commonly two to eight weeks, longer when the service line needs work. File early; the utility queue is the schedule.
Do I need a panel upgrade just to add one EV charger?+
Often, no. A proper load calculation comes first; many 100A homes can host a Level 2 charger with a load-management device for a fraction of an upgrade's cost. If the calc says you're genuinely out of headroom — or more electrification is coming — upgrade once and be done.
Is my Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel really a problem?+
Yes — both brands have long-documented histories of breakers failing to trip under fault, and many insurers now surcharge or decline homes that keep them. Replacement is a same-cost variant of a standard panel upgrade and is the single clearest safety upgrade in older Bay Area housing.
